Official Poker Rules and Etiquette

Poker is a game of skill, and to be successful you need to learn the game rules and strategy, and practice your skills. You also need to make smart decisions in deciding what limits and games to play. A fun game won’t always be the most profitable or provide the best learning opportunity, and a poor decision can cost you a lot of money.

To ensure that all players can see the amount of their chips in a stack, poker chip values are usually separated by color and stacked in groups of 20. In casino and cardroom poker games, a house dealer will keep track of the amount of chips in each player’s stack. This is a vital tool for tracking tournament stack sizes, and it helps ensure that all players are able to call a raise.

When a player calls a bet but does not reveal their hand, they are said to have made a “blind call.” They may not show their cards, move their hands closer to the middle, or count their chips to give the impression that they are calling, all of which are considered poor etiquette.

While it is common for players to talk to one another between hands, they must not discuss the strength of their hand or give advice. This is not only a violation of the rules, but it can also give away information that could be used to cheat at the game. If this happens, the table manager (TD) will enforce penalties, including disqualification.
