The professional Tournament Directors Association (Poker TDA) is responsible for the development and maintenance of the rules of poker. Founded in 2001 by a group of poker players, the organization now includes 2,500 members in 63 countries, including managers of large live poker rooms and independent tournaments. Among the members of the association is WSOP Tournament Director Jack Effel, who has helped put together several editions of the official poker rules.

Poker table etiquette requires that players act ethically. They should not reveal their hand to others before the flop and should not react to other players’ actions. They should not be tempted to give advice to a friend if they are not sure about their hand. It is also against poker rules to point out other players’ mistakes or to make fun of them.

There are many variations of the game of poker, but most of them were developed in the United States during the mid-1800s. While many variations have similarities in structure and betting rules, some differ from standard poker rules, such as a fixed order of play. The game’s specifications should describe the hand values, betting rounds, and actions that occur between rounds.

Players may raise their bets if they have higher cards than the one in front of them. If they already have a bet, they must match it. If they don’t, they may raise by adding a certain amount. The amount of the raise depends on the stakes in the game.
