Interactive Narrative – Novice Authoring Strategies in the Idn Play Artefact

The idn play is a popular gaming platform that offers a diverse online gambling ecosystem. Unlike its competitors, which specialize in specific genres, idn play is a multifaceted gaming platform that caters to a variety of player interests and needs. This is reflected in its multifaceted gaming approach, commitment to technological innovation, emphasis on community engagement, robust security measures, seamless accessibility, and player-centric loyalty programs.

These features distinguish idn play as an exemplary interactive narrative that empowers its audience as interactors and enables them to make decisions in the context of a dynamic artefact. This article explores the use and development of novice authoring strategies in idn play by analysing hundreds of design and reflection sequences using four strands of analysis (narrative elements, choice poetics, character development, Twine tree structure). Findings suggest that, over time, students built characters of increasing literary quality and sophistication and used these to negotiate socio-emotional and moral dilemmas, which became pivot points in the narrative trajectories. These trajectories, in turn, enabled them to gain understanding of the dynamic complexity of the artefact. These hermeneutic encounters with idn play enable players to develop complex understandings of the artefact, thereby overcoming the need for permanent reduction of presented material inherent in the fixed narrative object of a journalistic article. This is a key finding that is relevant to interactive narrative research and pedagogy. It also demonstrates the importance of embracing complex dynamics in online gaming. This will improve player experience and ultimately lead to higher revenues for the platform.
